Rubella (German measles)

Rubella can cause damage to an unborn baby. A simple blood test can show, whether the mother-to-be has antibodies to the disease. If the tests show no immunity, then you will be offered the vaccination.

Chicken pox

The risk of birth defects from chicken pox in pregnancy, occurs in the first trimester. After the first 12 weeks there is little risk.


Toxoplasmosis is an infection that can cause miscarriage and still birth. Caused by a parasite, it can be contracted from handling cat faeces, so avoid contact with the litter tray. It can also occur from eating or handling meat that is raw or undercooked.
