When you’re amidst the chaos that the arrival of a new baby often brings, probably the last thing on your mind is the need to start taking exercise.
However, being active is just as important for your baby as it is for you. Your baby’s brain grows more rapidly in the first year than at any other time, and movement has a crucial effect on its development. Exercise makes them fitter and stronger, helping improve eating and sleeping patterns at the same time.
Finding a structured activity that you and your baby can enjoy from birth can be challenging. Swimming is unique in that you can start literally straightaway and, better still, it feels completely natural. After all, babies have just spent their first nine months cocooned safely in warm fluid, so they really enjoy the same freedom of movement in a warm-water pool.
Swimming exercises every single muscle in the body – including some your baby would never even find on land. Despite being very gentle, it provides a complete physical workout, strengthening your baby’s heart, lungs and respiratory system, again helping the development of the brain.
Swimming is Also Fun!
Swimming with your child isn’t just about fitness, it’s also all about having lots of fun. Babies love the skin-to-skin contact with you in the water, and the intimacy of the pool environment can really add to the bonding experience. What’s more, your baby will amaze you with how much they are able to do with the support of warm water; enhancing an already truly precious time.
While swimming is the only structured activity you can enjoy right from your baby’s birth, it’s also tremendous fun and provides ideal gentle exercise for your tiny tot. It also instills them with a lifetime’s water confidence and water safety skills that will, hopefully last them a lifetime. And for you, it provides a unique opportunity to share in your child’s first achievements, challenges, and triumphs.
